How many restaurants in Jakarta that specialized in Medan's cuisine? I can safely say: not many. Every time I asked someone to recommend me a nice Medan cuisine eatery in Jakarta (other than the godly Garuda), they’d reply “Just fly to Medan then.” (I would if you’ll pay me the airfare, you jerks!). So imagine how happy I am when discovering this new cute little restaurant served Medan-styled in Kemang Selatan area. Not only it could be the answer to desperation for good Medanese foods in Jakarta, but it is definitely a breath of fresh air in the middle of Western food-dominated eatery scene in Kemang (not to mention its two -yes, two!- 7-11 in the area. Why the hell we needs two 7-11 within the same frickin’ area? High demand of shitty hotdogs and Slurpees?). However, there’s something quite fishy about the place. Maybe it’s the logo. Any place that bore the logo that looked like Ibu Ani SBY’s silhouette always made me reciting the line “I have a bad feeling about this” Han Solo-style. (Yes, we've seen the real Kak Ani in person. Her hair was epic indeed).
So, we entered the place. It’s cute. It had green-and-white nuances that somehow remind me of a restaurant version of a Sour Sally booth. Kak Ani definitely is not aiming for the “authentic kedai Medan” looks and opted for the slicker, more modern looking “warung”. Fair enough, the place is quite comfy despite lacking characters.

Too bad the blandness was not stopped in the interior alone. The foods are still a lot to be desired. We tried their Nasi Begadoh, Lontong Sayur, and Soto Medan and our verdict is: they’re’ OK if you are really hungry and have nowhere else to eat and don’t mind if your foods are either a little too salty or a bit too bland. I guess my quest for good Medan food have to continue because I can’t find it in this rather mediocre place. Blah.
Verdict: If i am a Medanese, i will be pissed and sue Kak Ani for defamation.
